Dry itchy scalp postpartum

After delivery, routines may change: washing less often, using new products, sweating more, or tying hair tightly can irritate the scalp. Flaking can also occur with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Small tender bumps may fit folliculitis, and marked scale can occur with scalp psoriasis. Head lice remains possible after close household contact. Postpartum timing is useful context, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free shampoo, then rinse completely. Keep nails short and press or pat rather than scratch. Avoid applying strong fragrances, hair dye, or concentrated oils to an irritated scalp. If you are breastfeeding, mention this when asking about a medicated shampoo treatment so the product choice and instructions can be reviewed for your situation. Wash combs and avoid sharing headwear when lice are suspected.

Book a review if itching continues, spreads, disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by scaling that does not settle, hair loss, or recurrent bumps. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, marked pain, rapidly spreading redness, or swelling of the face. A clinician can distinguish a common scalp presentation from infection or another condition and direct treatment.
