Dry foreskin and yeast infection: what to know

Yeast-related inflammation may cause itching, redness, soreness, small cracks, a moist coating or discomfort when the foreskin moves. Friction, scented products, trapped moisture, diabetes, antibiotics and skin conditions can also irritate this area. A vaginal yeast infection can occur alongside symptoms such as [Vaginal Itching](/symptoms/vaginal-itching/), [Vulval Pain](/symptoms/vulval-pain/) or [Vaginal Discharge](/symptoms/vaginal-discharge/), but genital symptoms do not confirm the same cause in a partner.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, retract the foreskin only as far as comfortable, and dry the skin carefully before replacing it. Avoid soap, deodorants, antiseptics and vigorous scrubbing. Do not use leftover steroid or antibiotic creams without advice. Avoid sex if it causes pain, and consider assessment if symptoms are new or recurrent.

Get urgent help if the foreskin is stuck behind the glans and cannot be moved forward, or if passing urine is difficult. Arrange prompt assessment for severe swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, ulcers, repeated episodes or symptoms that do not settle with recommended care.
