Dry eyes and perimenopause: what to know

Short answer
Perimenopause can make dry, gritty, burning eyes more noticeable as hormone changes affect the eye surface and tears.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common sensations
- Grittiness, burning, tired eyes or excess watering
- Helpful first step
- Reduce airflow and take regular screen breaks
What the symptom may mean
Dry eyes can feel scratchy, tired, watery or sensitive to light. Hormonal shifts during the menopause transition may change tear production and the oily layer that slows evaporation. Screen use, contact lenses, air conditioning, smoke and some medicines can add to the irritation. Dry eyes are not a diagnostic sign of perimenopause on their own; other eye-surface problems can feel similar.
You may also notice cycle changes or symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes or reduced sexual desire. See [Perimenopause](/conditions/perimenopause/) for the wider pattern.
Ways to ease dry eyes
Take regular screen breaks, blink fully and keep fans or air vents from blowing directly at your face. A clean warm compress over closed eyelids may support the eyelid oils. Lubricating eye drops can help; a pharmacist or clinician can advise which type suits contact-lens use or frequent symptoms. Avoid rubbing your eyes and pause contact lenses if they worsen discomfort. Arrange an eye examination if symptoms keep returning or interfere with reading, driving or sleep.
When to seek care
Seek urgent eye care for sudden vision change, marked eye pain, severe light sensitivity, an eye injury, or intense redness with discharge. Contact a clinician promptly when dryness lasts despite self-care, affects one eye much more than the other, or occurs with swollen joints, a very dry mouth or another new health concern.
Questions for your doctor
Could my medicines, contact lenses or another eye condition be contributing? Which lubricating drops and eyelid-care routine are appropriate? Do my menstrual changes and eye symptoms fit perimenopause, and do I need an eye examination?
