Dry crusty spots on skin: what to know

A spot can dry after a pimple, shaving irritation, scratching, or a small surface injury. Acne may leave inflamed bumps that form a thin crust after they break; Folliculitis can cause tender, pimple-like bumps around hairs. Perioral Dermatitis and Rosacea may cause facial bumps with redness or burning, while Razor Bumps often follow close shaving. Hormonal Acne can follow a recurring pattern, but a crusty spot is not enough to identify its cause.

Note whether spots are itchy, painful, warm, wet, clustered, or recurring in the same place. Photographing a changing area in good light can help you describe its course without repeatedly touching it.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and avoid squeezing, picking, scrubbing, or applying alcohol. Keep the surface lightly moisturised with a bland product and use clean hands before touching it. Stop any new product that stings, and reduce friction from masks, helmets, collars, or shaving until the skin calms. Do not apply leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice, since the wrong product can mask or worsen some facial rashes.

Book a dermatology assessment for spots that do not heal, recur, multiply, scar, or bleed easily. Get prompt care if redness spreads, pain increases, swelling is marked, pus develops, or you feel feverish. Lesions near the eye, or a rapidly changing dark or irregular spot, should be assessed without delay. Treatment depends on whether the process is acne, follicle inflammation, dermatitis, rosacea, or infection.
