Dry Cracks at the Corner of the Mouth: What to Know

Saliva can collect in the mouth corners and repeatedly wet the skin. Drying, rubbing, lip licking, dentures or an altered bite may then create fissures. Irritant or allergic contact dermatitis can add redness and scaling. Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis may involve the area, particularly when similar patches appear elsewhere. A crack that is persistently red, crusted, tender or spreading may also need assessment for infection rather than simple dryness.

Rinse gently and pat the corners dry after eating or brushing. Apply a bland protective ointment often to reduce contact with saliva and friction; an emollient can support the surface barrier. Avoid fragranced balms, harsh cleansers, picking and licking. Check that dental appliances fit comfortably. If a clinician suspects infection, use only the prescribed treatment and follow its directions, because fungal and bacterial causes need different approaches.

Book a medical review if the fissures recur, spread, bleed, form yellow crusts, or remain painful despite gentle barrier care. Seek earlier advice if there are mouth sores, fever, marked swelling, difficulty eating, or cracks in several body areas. A clinician may examine the skin, mouth, teeth and medications to identify an underlying trigger.
