Dry cough and pneumonia: what to know

Short answer
Pneumonia can present with a dry cough, but the cough alone cannot confirm pneumonia; fever, breathlessness, chest pain, and examination findings also matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How pneumonia may appear
Pneumonia is an infection or inflammation affecting lung tissue. Pneumonia commonly presents with cough, and some people have little or no phlegm. Fever, chills, tiredness, faster breathing, breathlessness, or pain that worsens with breathing may occur. COVID-19 and influenza can cause respiratory symptoms and may be associated with pneumonia. Sepsis is a serious response to infection, with signs such as confusion, very rapid deterioration, or extreme weakness. Symptoms can overlap with less serious illnesses, so the condition needs clinical assessment rather than a symptom-based guess.
What to do
If you feel significantly unwell or breathing is harder than usual, contact a clinician promptly. Rest, drink fluids if able, and follow advice about fever or pain relief. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share medicines; treatment depends on the suspected cause and severity. Note when the cough began, whether you have fever or chills, and whether you are coughing up phlegm. This helps the assessment.
Urgent warning signs
Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or rapidly worsening illness. Arrange same-day medical advice for breathlessness, chest pain with breathing, persistent high temperature, marked weakness, or dehydration. Older adults, babies, pregnant people, and those with long-term disease may need earlier review.
