Dry cough with a normal chest X-ray

A chest X-ray may show changes such as some infections, but cough can arise from the nose, reflux, asthma, medicines, or airway irritation that is not visible on this test. Chronic cough sometimes needs a history, examination, breathing tests, medication review, or other targeted assessment. A normal image does not diagnose or exclude tuberculosis in every situation; symptoms and exposure history guide whether tuberculosis screening is appropriate. Bronchiectasis may require different imaging when clinical features suggest it. Keep the report and ask what question the scan answered.

Arrange follow-up if the cough continues, and describe its triggers, timing, medicines, smoking or vaping exposure, and any breathlessness. A GP consultation can help connect the X-ray finding with your examination and decide whether further tests are useful. Do not repeat imaging or take antibiotics simply because the cough remains; the next step depends on the whole clinical picture. Avoid irritants and use only recommended symptom medicines.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent night sweats, unexplained weight loss, prolonged cough, or relevant tuberculosis exposure, even after a normal image.
