Dry cough with throat irritation: what to know

Each cough briefly dries and rubs the throat lining. That irritation can create a tickle, which prompts another cough even when there is little mucus. A common cold or acute bronchitis may start the cycle. Acid reflux can expose the throat to stomach contents, especially after meals or during sleep. Allergic rhinitis and asthma can add drainage or airway sensitivity. Persistent or recurring symptoms may fit chronic cough and should be assessed rather than continually suppressed.

Take frequent sips of water or a warm drink, rest your voice, and breathe through your nose when possible. Avoid smoke, vaping, dusty air, and strong fragrances. If reflux seems connected, try smaller meals and stay upright after eating. Do not repeatedly clear your throat; swallow or sip instead.
