Dry cough and difficulty breathing: what to know

Coughing can briefly disrupt breathing, but persistent breathlessness may reflect narrowed airways, infection, inflammation, or another problem affecting the lungs or heart. Asthma, acute bronchitis, a common cold, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, and chronic cough can present with cough; some people also notice wheeze or a tight chest. The symptom combination cannot identify the cause without assessment.

Pay attention to whether you can speak in full sentences, whether symptoms began suddenly, and whether there is wheezing, fever, chest pressure, bluish lips, swelling, or exposure to smoke or an allergen.

Stop exertion and sit upright in a position that makes breathing easier. Move away from smoke or a suspected irritant. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler only according to your personal instructions. Do not drive yourself if you are severely breathless or faint.

Call emergency services immediately for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, collapse, confusion, or swelling of the face or tongue. Seek urgent same-day care for new breathlessness, fever with worsening cough, or symptoms that keep returning.

Ask whether you need oxygen measurement, chest examination, breathing tests, or imaging; what warning signs should trigger emergency care; and how to use any prescribed inhaler correctly.
