What should you know about dried blood in sputum?

Small rusty or brown streaks may be older blood mixed with mucus after forceful coughing, a dry nose, or drainage from irritated sinuses. Chest infections such as Acute Bronchitis or Pneumonia can also inflame airway lining. Ongoing airway conditions, including Bronchiectasis or COPD, may cause repeated blood-stained sputum. The appearance alone cannot identify the source, so note whether blood is bright red, mixed through phlegm, or only on its surface.

Avoid smoking and inhaled irritants, sip fluids, and do not suppress a productive cough with leftover medicines. Record when the blood appears, how much is visible, and any fever, chest pain, breathlessness, or weight change. Contact a clinician promptly if it returns, lasts beyond a short illness, or occurs with a long-term lung condition. Antibiotic Treatment is useful only when a clinician identifies a bacterial infection.

Seek emergency help for more than a trace of blood, repeated fresh bleeding, difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, faintness, blue lips, or a fast deterioration. Prompt assessment is also needed when blood-stained sputum occurs with high fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.
