Does trigger finger cause locking or catching finger?

A tendon normally glides through a narrow pulley at the base of the finger. With trigger finger, thickening or swelling can make that passage tight. The finger may click, catch during bending, or lock in a bent position before releasing. Symptoms often become more noticeable after rest or with repeated gripping. A locked or catching finger can have other causes, so an examination helps separate tendon problems from joint or injury-related problems.

Temporarily reduce forceful gripping and repetitive hand tasks, while maintaining gentle comfortable movement. A clinician may recommend a splint, hand therapy, medication, or an injection depending on the examination. Avoid repeatedly snapping the finger straight or trying to force it through a painful catch.

Arrange an assessment when catching is frequent, painful, or affecting daily tasks. Seek prompt care if the finger stays locked and cannot be gently straightened, or if sudden swelling, redness, warmth, or injury accompanies the problem.

Ask whether the catching is coming from the tendon pulley, whether splinting is appropriate, and what signs would mean that a procedure should be considered.
