Does transvaginal ultrasound treat ovarian cysts?

A transvaginal scan uses a slim probe to produce images of the ovaries and pelvis. It can help describe whether a cyst looks fluid-filled, solid or mixed, and whether there are features that need closer assessment. The result is interpreted alongside symptoms, menstrual history, pregnancy status and examination findings.

Many cysts are monitored with a later scan, particularly when they are small or likely to change with the menstrual cycle. Other situations may call for medicine for symptoms, specialist review, or surgery. Ultrasound does not drain, shrink or remove a cyst.

Ask what the scan showed, whether follow-up imaging is recommended, and which symptoms should change your plan. Keep a record of pelvic pain, bloating, bleeding or cycle changes. Take prescribed pain relief as directed, and mention pregnancy plans or a chance of pregnancy before any treatment discussion.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden severe pelvic pain, pain with vomiting, faintness, marked dizziness, a swollen or rigid abdomen, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms can occur with complications such as twisting or rupture and need prompt evaluation.

Ask which ovary is involved, what the cyst looks like, whether it is likely to resolve, and when reassessment is due. Ask how symptoms should be managed and which changes require emergency care.
