Does thyroid hormone replacement help with constipation?

Low thyroid activity can slow movement through the digestive system, making stools less frequent or harder to pass. If hypothyroidism is confirmed, appropriate hormone replacement may support more normal bowel movement as thyroid activity is corrected.

Constipation can also follow low fibre intake, inadequate fluids, reduced activity, changes in routine, or medicines such as some painkillers. Improvement may therefore require more than thyroid treatment. A clinician can check whether the thyroid is involved and whether another bowel problem needs attention.

Use thyroid medicine exactly as prescribed and do not increase it to treat constipation. Unless a clinician has advised otherwise, regular movement, enough fluid, and gradual dietary fibre can support bowel function. Record stool changes, abdominal symptoms, and any new medicine so the pattern can be discussed at review.

Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, black stools, or blood in the stool. Arrange medical review when constipation is new, recurring, or accompanied by unexplained weight change or marked tiredness.

Ask whether your thyroid results could explain the bowel change, when treatment should be checked, and whether a medicine or bowel condition may be contributing. Ask before using a laxative regularly, especially if pain or vomiting is present.
