Does targeted therapy treat lung cancer?

Lung cancer cells can carry molecular changes that influence growth. A tissue or blood test may look for these changes before treatment is chosen. If a suitable target is found, a medicine may block its signal and help control the cancer. The result is not determined by the lung cancer name alone: tumour type, spread, general health, earlier treatment, and test quality all matter. Some cancers have no target recognised by the available medicines.

Ask whether comprehensive biomarker testing has been completed and what each result means. Discuss tablets or other delivery methods, interactions with current medicines, and how response will be assessed. The team may use scans, symptom review, and blood tests. Report new rash, diarrhoea, severe fatigue, swelling, or changes in breathing rather than adjusting the dose yourself.

Get urgent medical advice for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, high fever, or sudden confusion. Emergency help is appropriate for severe difficulty breathing, fainting, blue lips, or sudden weakness. New breathing symptoms can reflect infection, cancer-related changes, or a treatment reaction, so prompt assessment matters.
