Does spinal fusion treat spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is narrowing around the spinal cord or the nerves leaving the spine. Decompression removes or reshapes tissue that is crowding those nerves. Fusion joins selected vertebrae to limit movement and provide stability. Because these operations do different jobs, fusion alone is not usually the part that creates more room for a compressed nerve. A surgeon may discuss both procedures when there is slipping between vertebrae, deformity, significant instability, or when removing bone could make the segment less stable. The plan depends on the location of the narrowing and the symptoms it produces.

Your assessment may include walking tolerance, leg pain, balance, strength, sensation and reflexes, alongside imaging. Mild or stable symptoms may be managed with activity adjustments, physiotherapy and medicines selected for you. If surgery is suggested, ask whether decompression alone is suitable and what evidence of instability supports adding fusion. Discuss expected changes in walking or arm function, recovery restrictions, rehabilitation and symptoms that surgery may not address.

Get urgent medical help for new bowel or bladder problems, numbness in the saddle area, or rapidly increasing weakness. Prompt assessment is needed if walking suddenly deteriorates or you cannot safely stand. Persistent leg or arm pain, tingling, balance difficulty or reduced walking distance should be reviewed even when symptoms developed gradually.

Ask where the narrowing is, whether decompression is planned, and what makes the spine unstable. Clarify the goals of fusion, alternatives, likely rehabilitation, movement restrictions and how nerve recovery will be assessed.
