Does pneumonia cause coughing up blood?

Inflamed airways can become fragile during pneumonia, so forceful coughing may produce small red or rust-coloured streaks in phlegm. The blood may come from irritated breathing tubes rather than deep lung tissue. Its appearance does not identify the cause by itself. Chest infection, bronchitis, a nose or throat bleed, blood-thinning medicine, and other lung problems can also cause this symptom.

Arrange prompt medical advice, especially if the symptom is new, recurring, or accompanied by fever, chest pain, breathlessness, or feeling unwell. Note how much blood you see, whether it is mixed with mucus, and when it started. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicine without medical advice. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoking while waiting for assessment.

Seek emergency help if you are coughing up more than a small streak, the bleeding is continuing, or breathing becomes difficult. Urgent assessment is also needed for blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, fainting, confusion, or marked weakness. These signs can indicate a serious breathing or bleeding problem and should not be monitored at home.

Ask whether you need a chest examination or imaging, whether your medicines could contribute to bleeding, and what changes should prompt immediate reassessment.
