Does perioral dermatitis cause pimples?

Most people with Perioral Dermatitis notice pimples or small red, skin-coloured, or inflamed bumps around the mouth. The rash may extend toward the nose or eyes and can feel dry, tight, itchy, burning, or tender. A narrow strip of skin next to the lips may remain relatively clear, but this pattern is not present in every person.

Perioral dermatitis is not the same as ordinary acne. Heavy creams, irritating skincare, some toothpaste ingredients, and steroid creams applied to the face can aggravate the rash in some people. Because several conditions resemble it, treatment should follow an examination rather than the appearance of a single spot.

Use a gentle cleanser and avoid scrubs, picking, fragranced products, and rich occlusive creams on the affected area while arranging advice. Do not apply a steroid cream to the face unless the prescribing clinician specifically directs you to do so; stopping a previously used steroid may cause a temporary flare that still needs appropriate guidance.

Take note of recent skincare changes, lip products, inhalers, or medicines and bring that information to a dermatology appointment. A clinician may recommend a simple routine and a prescription treatment suited to the rash and its location.

Seek assessment if bumps persist, spread toward the eyes, become painful, crusted, or affect your confidence despite a gentle routine. Prompt review is especially useful when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms began after a facial steroid. Seek urgent care for swelling of the eyes or lips, trouble breathing, or rapidly worsening facial inflammation.
