Does an MRI scan treat a brain tumour?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the brain and surrounding structures. It can help show a tumour's position, size, shape, and relationship with nearby tissue. Contrast medicine may sometimes be given through a vein to make particular areas easier to see.

The scan itself does not remove or destroy tumour cells. The images may help the team distinguish possible tumour tissue from swelling, plan surgery or radiotherapy, and compare changes during follow-up. A scan cannot by itself provide every detail needed for a diagnosis; tissue testing may be recommended in some situations.

If an MRI has been requested, ask whether contrast is planned and tell the imaging team about metal implants, a pacemaker, kidney problems, pregnancy, or claustrophobia. Follow the preparation instructions and bring information about medicines and previous scans.

After the images are reviewed, your specialist can explain what they show and whether another test or treatment is needed. Brain tumour treatment may involve surgery, radiotherapy, medicines, monitoring, or a combination selected for the individual diagnosis.

Seek urgent medical help for a first seizure, sudden weakness or numbness, new trouble speaking, severe worsening headache with vomiting, confusion, or loss of consciousness. These symptoms need prompt assessment and should not wait for a routine scan appointment.
