Does migraine cause nausea?

During a migraine attack, changes in the brain can affect areas that control nausea and vomiting. Head pain is not required for every attack, so nausea alongside light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, visual changes, or a familiar aura may still fit a migraine pattern. Other illnesses, medicines, pregnancy, stomach infections, and dehydration can also cause nausea, so the full pattern matters.

Rest in a quiet, dim room and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you can keep fluids down. Avoid strong smells and heavy meals; bland foods may be easier when your stomach settles. Use your prescribed migraine medicine as directed, ideally early in the attack. A clinician can discuss an anti-nausea medicine if attacks repeatedly stop you from taking fluids or other treatment.

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or confusion, fainting, a stiff neck with fever, severe dehydration, blood or green material in vomit, or symptoms after a head injury. Arrange medical review when nausea is new, persistent, worsening, or different from your usual migraine pattern.
