Short answer

Changing Mole is a very common presentation of Melanoma, but a changing mole needs assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a changing mole can show

Most people with Melanoma notice changing mole. Change may involve a mole becoming asymmetrical, developing an uneven edge, showing several colours, enlarging, or becoming raised. It may also itch, bleed, crust, or feel different. These features can help a clinician decide which spots need closer examination, but they cannot confirm melanoma by themselves.

Moles can also change because of irritation, inflammation, benign growth, or other skin conditions. A clinician may examine the whole skin surface with a dermatoscope and may recommend removing a suspicious spot so it can be checked under a microscope. What to do next

Arrange a skin examination for a mole that is changing in size, shape, colour, elevation, or sensation. Note when you first noticed the change and, if safe, bring dated photographs that show its development. Avoid picking or repeatedly rubbing the area. Keep the appointment even if the mole later appears less irritated.

When to seek care

Request prompt medical review when a changing mole bleeds without a clear injury, forms a persistent crust, becomes painful, or changes quickly. Seek urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly spreading redness, or signs of infection around a recently injured spot.

Questions for your doctor

What changes do you see on examination? Should this mole be photographed, monitored, or removed? How soon should it be reviewed? What skin changes should prompt me to return earlier?

Questions people ask

Does every changing mole mean melanoma?

No. Many changing moles have benign causes, but a new or changing spot should be assessed because appearance alone cannot provide a diagnosis.

What should I record before my appointment?

Record when the change began, what changed, and whether there has been bleeding, crusting, itching, pain, or repeated irritation.
