Does lung cancer cause shortness of breath?

Breathlessness may be noticeable during activity or may occur while resting. Lung cancer can also cause a persistent cough, chest discomfort, wheezing, coughing blood, tiredness, or unexplained weight loss. These features do not establish a diagnosis; asthma, chest infections, heart conditions, anaemia, and other lung problems can also cause shortness of breath.

A clinician may listen to your chest, measure oxygen levels, review your smoking and exposure history, and arrange imaging or other tests when appropriate.

Arrange a medical assessment if breathlessness is new, worsening, or lasting longer than expected after an infection. Note when it happens, what activity triggers it, whether you have cough or chest pain, and any recent travel or illness. Avoid smoking and seek advice before using someone else’s inhaler or medicine.

Get emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pressure, or coughing a large amount of blood. Sit upright while waiting and avoid driving yourself if you are struggling to breathe.

Ask what may be causing the breathlessness, whether you need chest imaging or lung-function testing, which warning signs should prompt urgent help, and how to manage symptoms safely while tests are arranged.
