Does a liver function test treat hepatitis A?

How the structures involved in Hepatitis A differ from normal

Short answer

A liver function test does not treat hepatitis A; it monitors liver inflammation while the infection runs its course.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test means

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that can inflame the liver. A liver function test measures blood markers linked with liver-cell irritation and the liver's processing work. It can help a clinician follow the illness, but the result does not remove the virus or make the person infectious for a shorter period.

Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and tests that look for hepatitis A infection. Abnormal values may take time to settle, and one result cannot predict the entire recovery pattern.

Supportive care

Follow the clinician's advice about rest, fluids and food, and use medicines only after checking that they are suitable for your liver. Avoid alcohol while recovering. Wash hands carefully after using the bathroom and before preparing food, and ask about reducing spread to household or close contacts.

Keep follow-up appointments so symptoms and liver tests can be reviewed. Do not share towels, razors or toothbrushes, and tell a clinician if you cannot keep fluids down.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for confusion, extreme sleepiness, repeated vomiting, bleeding, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. Seek prompt advice for dark urine, pale stools, or abdominal pain that is getting worse.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tests confirm hepatitis A, how often your liver function should be checked, when normal activities are suitable, and how to protect people close to you.

Questions people ask

Does a normal liver test mean hepatitis A is gone?

Not necessarily. Your clinician uses symptoms, infection testing and the trend in results to judge recovery.

Should I take pain medicine during hepatitis A?

Check with a clinician or pharmacist first because some medicines may need extra caution when the liver is inflamed.
