Does inhaler therapy help with cough?

Asthma and some other airway conditions can cause cough through inflammation, extra sensitivity, or tightening of the breathing tubes. A reliever inhaler can ease airway tightening, while a preventer targets inflammation when used regularly. Cough from a cold, post-nasal drainage, reflux, smoking, or a medicine side effect may need a different approach. A cough that improves after an inhaler still deserves a proper diagnosis, especially if it keeps returning or comes with wheeze or breathlessness.

Use only the inhaler prescribed for you and check that you can coordinate the device correctly. Record when the cough appears, such as during exercise, at night, around dust, or after meals, and note any mucus, wheeze, fever, or breathlessness. A clinician can listen to your chest and decide whether breathing tests or treatment changes are appropriate. Avoid smoke and other known irritants while symptoms settle.

Seek urgent help if coughing is accompanied by severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, coughing up blood, sudden chest pain, or inability to speak in full sentences. Arrange a prompt medical review for a cough that is worsening, repeatedly interrupts sleep, or follows a choking episode.
