Short answer

Dizziness is a very common presentation of Hypoglycaemia, as the brain depends on glucose for normal function and balance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why dizziness can happen

A drop in blood glucose may feel like lightheadedness, unsteadiness, weakness, or a sense that you might faint. Sweating, hunger, trembling, palpitations, headache, irritability, and trouble concentrating can occur at the same time. Dizziness has many causes, including dehydration, low blood pressure, inner-ear problems, medicines, and heart rhythm changes, so the symptom alone does not identify hypoglycaemia.

Steps during symptoms

Sit or lie down to reduce the chance of falling. If you are awake, can swallow normally, and suspect low glucose, check it if possible and use the fast-acting treatment in your personal hypo plan. Recheck as directed and have a meal or sustaining snack when advised. Avoid driving, alcohol, and strenuous activity until you are fully recovered. If episodes repeat, record food, activity, medicines, readings, and timing for your clinician.

When to seek emergency help

Call emergency services for dizziness with confusion, seizure, collapse, inability to swallow, loss of consciousness, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or new one-sided weakness. Do not give food or drink to someone who is unconscious, having a seizure, or unable to swallow. Get prompt medical advice for repeated episodes or dizziness that persists after glucose has been corrected.

Questions for your doctor

How can I confirm whether an episode is caused by low glucose? Could my medication, meals, or activity be involved? What treatment should I keep available? Which symptoms require an ambulance?

Questions people ask

It can, but persistent or severe dizziness needs medical assessment because another cause may be present.

What should I do if someone with suspected hypoglycaemia cannot swallow?

Call emergency services and do not give food or drink by mouth; follow the person’s prescribed emergency plan if one is available.
