Short answer

Limping is a common presentation of Hip Fracture, because pain and reduced stability can change the way you bear weight.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What limping can mean after a hip fracture

A fracture may make standing or walking painful, so you shorten your stride, lean away from the injured side, or avoid putting full weight through that leg. Swelling, muscle guarding and weakness can add to the uneven gait. Some people cannot walk at all, especially after a fall, while others can still take a few steps. Limping by itself does not identify the cause; hip, pelvic, knee and soft-tissue problems can also alter walking.

What to do next

After a fall or sudden hip pain, stop walking if weight bearing hurts and arrange urgent medical assessment. Do not try to test the leg repeatedly or drive yourself if movement is difficult. A clinician may examine leg position and movement and use imaging to check the bone. Until assessed, keep the person warm and supported, avoid pulling on the leg, and follow any instructions about using crutches or a frame. Rehabilitation after treatment commonly focuses on safe transfers, strength, balance and a gradual return to walking.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help after a fall when severe hip or groin pain, inability to stand, a visibly shortened or turned-out leg, numbness, or a cold or pale foot is present. Urgent assessment is also needed for new worsening pain or a sudden loss of walking ability. These signs can reflect a serious injury or reduced blood flow and should not be managed by waiting at home.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether imaging has ruled out a fracture, how much weight you may place on the leg, which walking aid is appropriate, and what changes should prompt immediate review. You can also ask when physiotherapy should begin and how progress will be checked.

Questions people ask

Can I walk with a hip fracture?

Some people can take limited steps, but walking may worsen pain or displacement. A suspected fracture needs prompt assessment rather than a walking test.

Will limping continue after treatment?

It can persist while pain, strength, balance or confidence recover. A planned rehabilitation programme can address these factors.
