Does Hepatitis A Cause Nausea?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. The illness can reduce appetite and make you feel sick, sometimes before other symptoms become clear. Vomiting, tiredness, a mild fever, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin and eyes may also occur. Symptoms can vary, and nausea by itself has many possible causes, including other infections, medicines, food-related illness, and digestive conditions. Nausea alone cannot identify Hepatitis A.

A clinician may assess your symptoms, recent food or water exposure, travel, contact with someone who was ill, and vaccination history. If Hepatitis A is suspected, blood tests can help assess the infection and liver function. Avoid assuming that nausea has one specific cause based on the symptom alone.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially if vomiting or diarrhoea is present. Rest, and try small portions of plain food when you can tolerate them. Avoid alcohol because the liver is involved, and check with a clinician or pharmacist before taking medicines or supplements, including products for nausea or pain. If Hepatitis A has been diagnosed, follow the infection-control advice given by your healthcare team and avoid preparing food for other people until they advise that it is safe.

Arrange medical advice if nausea persists, keeps returning, prevents you from drinking, or occurs with signs that could involve the liver, such as yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusually pale stools. Seek urgent care if you cannot keep fluids down, become confused or unusually drowsy, faint, develop severe abdominal pain, or show signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked dizziness. Prompt assessment is also sensible after a known exposure to Hepatitis A or recent travel where the infection may be present.
