Short answer

Cracked Skin is a very common presentation of Hand Eczema, as inflammation and dryness can weaken the protective skin barrier.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common presentation
Dry, inflamed hands with fissures or painful splits
Barrier support
Frequent thick moisturiser and reduced exposure to irritants

Why cracks form

Hand eczema can make the skin dry, inflamed, rough, itchy, and sore. Repeated washing, detergents, solvents, wet work, cold air, and friction may strip surface oils and deepen fissures. Cracks commonly affect the knuckles, fingertips, finger webs, or palms and can sting when exposed to water or household products.

Cracked skin has other possible causes, including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, psoriasis, and infection. The pattern, exposures, other symptoms, and response to care help a clinician work out the cause.

Protecting the skin

Use a fragrance-free, thick moisturiser frequently, especially after washing, and choose lukewarm water with a gentle cleanser. Wear protective gloves suited to the task, with a soft cotton layer when practical, and replace them if sweat or chemicals collect inside. Do not pick at loose skin; cover painful fissures with a clean dressing and seek advice about treatment for inflammation.

When to seek care

Arrange an appointment if cracks keep returning, interfere with work or sleep, or do not improve with careful protection. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or increasing pain, which can signal infection. A clinician should also review sudden widespread blistering or a rash linked to a new product.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what type of hand eczema is likely, which products or tasks may be aggravating it, how to protect fissures, whether patch testing is useful, and which prescribed treatment is appropriate for flares.

Questions people ask

Can hand eczema make cracks hurt?

Yes. Fissures can expose sensitive skin and sting with water, soap, chemicals, bending, or pressure.

Does cracked skin always mean hand eczema?

No. Cracked skin has several possible causes, so the pattern and exposures should be assessed if it persists or worsens.
