Does a GP consultation treat chronic sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis can cause blocked or runny nose, reduced smell, facial pressure, postnasal mucus and a cough. The GP will ask how long symptoms have lasted, whether they affect one or both sides, and whether allergies, asthma, dental problems or previous infections may contribute. They may examine your nose, throat and face.

Management often focuses on reducing nasal inflammation and improving drainage. Depending on the assessment, the GP may recommend a saline rinse, a nasal steroid or another treatment, with instructions on safe technique. Antibiotics are not suitable for every flare. Persistent, severe or uncertain symptoms may lead to an ear, nose and throat referral.

Arrange a consultation when nasal blockage, discharge, facial pressure or reduced smell continues or repeatedly returns. Bring details of treatments already tried, allergies, asthma, dental symptoms and any medicines. If using a rinse, use the water and cleaning method recommended by a pharmacist or clinician. Follow the treatment instructions and return if improvement is limited.

Seek urgent care for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, facial weakness, or rapidly worsening illness. Prompt medical review is also needed for severe one-sided facial pain, persistent high fever or marked swelling.
