Does gout cause joint swelling?

Gout is an inflammatory response to urate crystals in and around a joint. The lining can become irritated and produce extra fluid, making the joint look larger and feel tight. Pain, tenderness, warmth and reduced movement may accompany the swelling. A flare can develop quickly and may settle, then return later.

Swelling can also follow a sprain, overuse, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or infection. The location, timing, skin changes and other symptoms help a clinician judge the possibilities; the visible swelling alone cannot confirm gout.

Reduce activity that loads the joint and support it comfortably. A cool pack wrapped in a towel can be used for brief intervals. Keep the joint gently positioned rather than forcing movement through pain. Use only medicines recommended for you, particularly if you have kidney, stomach, heart or blood-pressure problems.

Seek urgent care if swelling is accompanied by fever, chills, rapidly increasing redness, severe pain, or feeling faint or very unwell. These signs can point to infection or another urgent problem. Book an assessment for a new unexplained swollen joint, repeated flares, or symptoms that interfere with walking or daily tasks.

Ask whether the swelling pattern is consistent with gout, whether fluid or blood testing is needed, and how your current medicines affect treatment choices. Ask how to protect the joint during future flares and when normal activity can resume.
