Does getting tubes tied stop periods?

Female sterilisation, also called tubal ligation or having the tubes tied, prevents sperm and egg from meeting by closing, cutting, or otherwise blocking the fallopian tubes. The ovaries generally continue releasing hormones, and the womb lining can still build up and shed as a period. Any change in bleeding after the procedure may therefore reflect another factor, such as stopping hormonal contraception, natural cycle variation, or a separate gynaecological issue.

Track the timing and flow of periods after the procedure and mention a marked change at follow-up. If a period is late, take a pregnancy test and contact a clinician, because sterilisation greatly reduces pregnancy risk but does not make pregnancy impossible. Ask about contraception if you also need protection from sexually transmitted infections, since tubal surgery does not provide that protection.

Get urgent medical advice for a missed period with pelvic or shoulder pain, fainting, dizziness, or vaginal bleeding, because pregnancy after sterilisation needs prompt assessment. Seek care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, wound redness, or worsening pain after surgery. These symptoms may reflect a complication or another condition and should not be dismissed as a normal period change.
