Does genitourinary syndrome of menopause cause vaginal itching?

Short answer

Yes. Vaginal Itching is a common presentation of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause, although other causes can produce the same symptom.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible mechanism
Lower oestrogen can make vulvovaginal tissues drier and more sensitive.
Other possible causes
Infections, contact irritation and skin conditions can also cause itching.
First step
Arrange an assessment when itching is new, persistent or returning.

What the itching may mean

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause develops when lower oestrogen levels affect the vulva, vagina, urethra and nearby tissues. The lining may become thinner, drier and more easily irritated, which can cause itching, burning, soreness or discomfort during sex. Some people also notice urinary urgency or repeated urinary symptoms.

Itching can also come from thrush, bacterial or sexually transmitted infections, contact irritation from soaps or pads, skin conditions, or another vaginal problem. The pattern of symptoms, examination and testing help distinguish these causes.

What to do about vaginal itching

Arrange a clinician visit if the itching is new, persistent or returning. Until then, wash the outside area gently with lukewarm water, avoid scented products and do not douche. Loose, breathable underwear may reduce moisture and friction. Avoid starting repeated over-the-counter treatments without checking the cause, because an antifungal treatment will not help every source of itching.

A clinician may discuss vaginal moisturisers, lubricants and prescription local oestrogen or other treatments when genitourinary syndrome of menopause fits the symptoms. Treatment choice depends on your symptoms, medical history and whether another condition needs attention.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for itching with unusual discharge or odour, sores, blisters, significant pain, fever, pelvic pain, pain when urinating or bleeding after menopause. Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness or feeling seriously unwell.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is most likely causing the itching, whether an examination or swab is needed, and which products should be avoided. You can also ask whether genitourinary syndrome of menopause could explain related dryness, burning or urinary changes, and which treatment is suitable for you.

Questions people ask

How does menopause-related tissue change cause itching?

Lower oestrogen can reduce moisture and make vulvar and vaginal tissues thinner and more sensitive to friction or irritants.

Should I use thrush treatment for menopausal itching?

Not automatically. Thrush is one possible cause, but examination or testing may be needed because several conditions produce similar itching.

Can genitourinary syndrome of menopause cause symptoms besides itching?

Yes. Dryness, burning, soreness during sex and urinary symptoms can occur alongside vaginal or vulvar itching.
