Does genetic carrier screening treat thalassaemia carrier?

Thalassaemia trait can be associated with small red blood cells and mild anaemia, although the cause of anaemia still needs checking. Carrier screening detects relevant inherited variants; it does not correct the blood count or remove carrier status. Iron deficiency and thalassaemia trait can look similar on a basic blood count, so iron treatment should follow appropriate testing rather than assumption. Testing both partners gives more useful information for reproductive counselling.

Take the result to your family doctor, obstetrician or genetic counsellor. Ask whether a full blood count, iron studies, haemoglobin analysis or molecular testing is needed. If both partners carry variants affecting haemoglobin, counselling can explain testing during pregnancy, embryo testing in assisted reproduction and other family-building options. Keep copies of previous results because variant names and laboratory methods can differ.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, heavy bleeding or profound weakness. These symptoms need assessment and cannot be attributed to carrier status without examination. Arrange non-urgent review for persistent fatigue, an unexpected anaemia result or a screening report that needs confirmation.
