Does exercise therapy treat hamstring strain?

Short answer
Exercise therapy can help treat a hamstring strain by gradually rebuilding muscle strength, movement tolerance, and confidence.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Rehabilitation style
- Progressive loading matched to symptoms
- Return goal
- Comfortable strength during running and sport movements
What this means
The hamstrings cross the back of the thigh and help control the hip and knee. A strain may cause sudden pain during running, a tender area, bruising, or weakness when bending the knee or extending the hip. Rehabilitation is adjusted to the injury’s severity, your symptoms, and the activities you need to resume.
Rest from the movement that caused pain may be useful at first, but prolonged complete rest can leave the muscle less prepared for normal demands. The goal is a measured return to loading.
Building the muscle back up
Early exercises may include gentle range-of-motion work and pain-limited contractions. Later stages often use bridges, hamstring curls, hip strengthening, controlled lengthening exercises, and eventually jogging or faster drills. Your clinician can adjust speed, resistance, and range so the muscle is challenged without a flare-up.
Warm up before practice and do not use a temporary reduction in pain as permission to sprint immediately. If soreness increases sharply or strength drops after a session, reduce the load and ask for guidance.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination after a pop, marked bruising, a visible indentation, significant weakness, or difficulty walking. Seek prompt care for severe pain after a major injury, rapidly increasing swelling, numbness, or a leg that becomes unusually cold or discoloured.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how severe the strain appears to be, when to begin strengthening, which lengthening exercises are suitable, and what strength or movement checks should come before returning to sprinting.

Questions people ask
Can I massage a hamstring strain?
Deep pressure can irritate a fresh injury. Ask a clinician when hands-on treatment is appropriate and pair it with a suitable exercise plan.
Why does the hamstring feel tight after a strain?
Protective muscle guarding, reduced movement, and weakness can all create tightness; forcing range is not the only way to address it.
