Does chronic sinusitis cause headache?

Swelling in the sinus lining can interfere with normal drainage and produce pressure around the forehead, cheeks or eyes. Head discomfort may occur with blocked nose, thick mucus, reduced smell or facial tenderness. Headache patterns vary, and migraine or tension-type headache can feel similar. A headache by itself cannot establish that chronic sinusitis is the cause; associated nasal and facial symptoms help guide assessment.

Keep a brief record of when the headache starts, where it is felt, and whether it comes with nasal symptoms, light sensitivity, nausea or visual changes. Rest, fluids and suitable saline nasal care may help when congestion is contributing. A clinician can assess the pattern and recommend treatment for sinus inflammation or a different headache cause. Follow the label for any pain medicine and avoid taking it more often than advised.

Get urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck with fever, or new vision loss. Seek review for headaches that keep returning, steadily worsen, wake you from sleep, or occur with persistent sinus symptoms. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when the pain is new and unlike your usual headaches.

Ask whether the headache pattern suggests sinus inflammation, migraine, tension, or another cause. You can ask what symptoms to track, which treatment is suitable, and when persistent headaches would need further investigation.
