Does chemotherapy treat cancer of unknown primary?

Treatment does not always require doctors to locate the original tumour. Information from a biopsy, scans and the pattern of spread can guide a chemotherapy plan. For some people, another systemic treatment or a treatment aimed at a particular area is more suitable.

Cancer of unknown primary means cancer has been confirmed at one or more sites, but the place where it began has not been identified after assessment. Pathologists examine the cells and may test markers that point towards a likely tissue of origin or a treatment target.

When the findings resemble a recognised cancer pattern, clinicians may use medicines commonly chosen for that pattern. If no specific origin is suggested, a broader chemotherapy combination may be considered. The purpose may be to reduce cancer, ease symptoms or slow its growth.

Request a clear explanation of what the biopsy shows, whether further testing could change treatment and how the proposed medicines were chosen. Mention all current medicines, supplements and medical conditions before therapy starts.

Keep the oncology contact details available and record new symptoms between visits. The team may use blood tests, imaging and changes in symptoms to judge the effect of therapy. If the cancer does not respond or side effects outweigh benefit, the plan can be reconsidered.

During chemotherapy, promptly follow the team's emergency advice for fever, shaking chills, new confusion, difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, bleeding that will not stop or rapidly worsening weakness. New severe pain, weakness of an arm or leg, or loss of bladder or bowel control also requires urgent medical assessment.

Ask which biopsy features guided the recommendation, what the treatment is expected to accomplish, how benefit will be measured, which side effects warrant an immediate call, and what other options may be considered if this regimen does not help.
