Does cervical spondylosis cause neck pain?

Cervical spondylosis involves gradual changes in the discs and small joints between the neck bones. Stiff joints, irritated tissues, muscle guarding, or a disc that no longer cushions movement can contribute to aching and reduced mobility. Pain may be local or spread toward the shoulders and upper back. It may feel worse after sustained screen use, awkward sleep, or repeated lifting, though symptoms vary. Neck pain has many possible causes, so the label cannot be confirmed from pain alone.

Keep gentle neck movement within a tolerable range and change position regularly during work or travel. Adjust the screen so you do not need to look down for long periods, and use heat or another simple measure only if it feels helpful and is safe for you. Avoid prolonged bed rest and sudden forceful neck manipulation. A clinician can tailor exercises, review medicines, and check whether the pain is affecting nerves.

Book an assessment when pain persists, repeatedly returns, limits sleep, or restricts normal neck movement. Seek prompt care for arm weakness, worsening numbness, loss of hand coordination, or pain after a significant injury. Urgent assessment is needed for trouble walking, new bladder or bowel control changes, fever with a very stiff neck, or sudden neurological symptoms such as facial drooping or speech difficulty.
