Short answer

Joint Swelling is a common presentation of Bursitis, particularly around an irritated fluid-filled bursa.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical location
Bursitis swelling is often localised beside a joint over the irritated bursa.
Helpful clue
Direct pressure and repeated movement may make the area more tender.

Does bursitis cause joint swelling?

The swelling may sit beside the joint rather than inside the joint itself, depending on which bursa is affected.

Why bursitis can look swollen

Bursae are small sacs that help tissues glide over one another near joints. Repeated pressure, friction, an injury, or prolonged kneeling can irritate one and cause local swelling, tenderness, and warmth. Movement or direct pressure may hurt, while the joint itself may still move relatively well. Swelling around a joint has several possible explanations, including injury, arthritis, tendon problems, or infection, so the precise location and the way symptoms began are useful clues. A swollen area does not by itself establish the cause.

What may help

Reduce the activity or position that repeatedly presses on the sore area, while keeping gentle movement within comfort if the joint is not acutely injured. A cool pack wrapped in cloth can be applied briefly to ease discomfort. Avoid leaning, kneeling, or resting body weight directly on the affected spot. Wear supportive equipment appropriate for the activity, and do not massage a hot or intensely tender swelling. A clinician can examine the area and decide whether physiotherapy, medication advice, fluid testing, or another treatment is appropriate.

When swelling needs prompt attention

Seek prompt medical care if swelling is rapidly increasing, the skin is hot and very red, pain is severe, or you have fever or feel unwell. Get urgent help after a significant injury, or if the limb becomes numb, pale, blue, or difficult to move. Arrange a routine assessment when swelling persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep or daily activities, or has no clear trigger. These patterns may need examination to distinguish bursitis from a joint or soft-tissue problem.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is the swelling over a bursa or inside the joint? What activity may have irritated it? Should I avoid a particular movement or use a support? Which symptoms would suggest infection or another urgent problem? When should I start or adjust physiotherapy?

Questions people ask

Is bursitis swelling always inside the joint?

No. Bursitis often causes a tender, localised swelling beside the joint where the bursa sits.

Can I exercise with bursitis swelling?

Avoid the activity that provokes pressure or pain, but gentle comfortable movement may be suitable unless a clinician advises otherwise.
