Does bronchiolitis cause cough?

Bronchiolitis affects the smallest breathing tubes, usually after a viral infection. Swelling and mucus reduce the space for air to move, causing cough, noisy breathing, a runny nose, and faster breathing. Babies may tire while feeding because sucking and breathing become harder together. The cough can continue after other cold symptoms improve. Cough by itself does not establish bronchiolitis, particularly in an older child or adult.

Offer smaller feeds more often if feeding is tiring, keep the child upright while awake, and clear nasal mucus gently before feeds when needed. Watch breathing effort, wet nappies, alertness, and how much the child drinks. Avoid cigarette smoke and do not give cough medicines to a young child unless a clinician specifically recommends them. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are worsening or you are worried.

Get urgent help if the child is struggling to breathe, has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, marked drowsiness, or cannot feed because of breathlessness. Seek prompt advice if feeds are much smaller, wet nappies become less frequent, or breathing is steadily getting faster. Young babies and children with heart, lung, or immune problems may need earlier review.

Ask how to measure breathing effort, how much fluid the child should take, which signs suggest dehydration, and whether follow-up is needed. Confirm which medicines are appropriate for the child’s age and when to return for reassessment.
