Does Bacterial Vaginosis Cause Vaginal Itching?

Bacterial vaginosis reflects a shift in the balance of vaginal bacteria. This can change the local environment and cause irritation, including itching around the vaginal opening or vulva. Discharge or a new smell may occur at the same time, but symptoms vary between people.

Thrush, contact dermatitis from soaps or pads, eczema, sexually transmitted infections, and other vulval conditions can also cause itching. A thick discharge, sores, pain, or urinary burning may point toward a different problem and deserves assessment.

Book an appointment if itching persists, returns, or comes with discharge, smell, pain, or skin changes. Until then, rinse the external skin with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid douching, perfumed products, and tight clothing. Do not assume an antifungal medicine is suitable; bacterial vaginosis and thrush require different approaches.

Tell the clinician about recent antibiotics, new products, sexual exposure, pregnancy, and any previous episodes. A swab or examination may be needed before treatment.

Seek prompt care for severe swelling, intense pain, blisters or sores, fever, pelvic pain, or difficulty passing urine. Arrange timely review for itching during pregnancy or after a new sexual exposure.
