Does atopic dermatitis cause cracked skin?

Dry, inflamed skin loses flexibility and may split where it bends or receives repeated friction. Cracks are often felt on the fingers, knuckles, hands, lips, feet, or behind the knees, but any active patch can fissure. They may sting when washed and can bleed after scratching. A crack creates an opening through which irritants and germs can enter, so soreness or worsening redness deserves attention.

Use a thick, bland moisturiser or ointment recommended for sensitive skin several times through the day, including after washing. Keep baths and showers lukewarm and brief, then pat dry. Cover painful hand fissures with a clean dressing if advised, and protect them from detergents, solvents, and frequent wet work. Do not peel loose skin or apply fragranced products to open cracks.

Seek medical advice when cracks are deep, recurrent, bleeding, or interfering with movement, sleep, or daily tasks. Prompt assessment is needed for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, yellow crusting, increasing pain, or fever. A clinician can check for infection and adjust treatment for the underlying inflammation.
