Does anaphylaxis cause wheezing?

Wheezing may sound like a high-pitched whistle, especially when breathing out. Anaphylaxis can also cause throat tightness, a hoarse voice, cough, swelling of the lips or tongue, hives, dizziness, vomiting, or trouble breathing. Breathing symptoms can worsen quickly because swelling and airway narrowing may affect the flow of air. Wheezing can have other causes, including asthma or a chest infection, so the sound alone cannot identify the cause.

Treat suspected anaphylaxis as an emergency. Use the person’s prescribed adrenaline auto-injector immediately if available, following its instructions, and call emergency services. Keep the person lying down unless breathing is easier sitting up; do not let them stand or walk. If symptoms do not improve or return and another prescribed injector is available, follow the emergency plan. Stay with the person and be ready to give responders the medicine name and time it was used.

Get emergency help immediately for wheezing after a likely allergen, particularly with throat or tongue swelling, difficulty speaking, faintness, widespread hives, vomiting, or rapidly worsening breathing. Do not wait to see whether the wheeze settles. Even if the person feels better after adrenaline, medical assessment is needed because symptoms can return and the airway may remain at risk.
