Does radiology perform a mammogram?

A radiographer positions each breast on the mammography equipment and takes X-ray images, using gentle compression to keep the tissue still and improve image quality. A radiologist examines the images and prepares a report for the clinician who requested the examination. Mammography may be used for screening or to assess a breast concern; the reason for your appointment affects the views and follow-up that are recommended.

Tell the service if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have had recent breast surgery or a biopsy. On the day, avoid deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on the breasts and underarms if the centre advises this, since some products can appear on an image. Wear a top that is easy to remove and mention any tender area so it can be positioned carefully.

Contact a clinician about a new breast lump, nipple discharge, nipple or skin change, or persistent focal pain rather than waiting for routine screening. A breast symptom does not by itself establish its cause, and the clinician may choose mammography, ultrasound, or another assessment. After the examination, seek advice for unusual severe pain, marked swelling, or skin injury.

Ask whether the appointment is for screening or a symptom, whether earlier images are available for comparison, when the report will arrive, and who will discuss any recommended follow-up.
