Does a radiology perform bone density scan?

A bone density scan, often called a DEXA scan, uses low-dose X-rays to estimate bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and lower spine. It can help assess bone strength and fracture risk, and may be used when age, previous fractures, certain medicines, or health conditions raise concern about bone loss. The result is interpreted with your clinical history; it does not by itself explain every cause of bone pain or detect every fracture.

Tell the imaging centre if you might be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or take calcium supplements; staff will advise whether any adjustment is needed. Wear clothing without metal fasteners when possible and bring details of medicines and previous scans. During the examination you remain still on a scanning table while the equipment passes over the selected body areas. The scan is usually brief, but timing varies by centre and the areas assessed.

Seek urgent assessment after a fall or injury if you have severe pain, inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed limb, numbness, or sudden loss of movement. A density scan is for planned assessment and does not replace an urgent X-ray when a fracture may have occurred. Arrange routine review for persistent back pain, height loss, or a fracture after minor force.

Ask why the scan is recommended, which sites will be measured, whether any medicines or supplements affect preparation, and how the result will guide prevention or treatment.
