In some services, another credentialed endoscopist may carry out the examination. The referral pathway depends on why the test is needed, the person's medical history, and local clinical arrangements.

Colonoscopy uses a flexible camera to examine the lining of the rectum and colon. It can investigate bowel symptoms, check an abnormal screening result, monitor certain bowel conditions, or provide surveillance after previous polyps or treatment.

During the examination, the clinician may take small tissue samples or remove a polyp if appropriate. These samples are examined in a laboratory. Sedation and pain-relief options differ, so the endoscopy team should explain what is planned and what the patient may feel.

Follow the bowel-preparation instructions carefully because remaining stool can hide the bowel lining and may prevent a complete examination. The instructions usually cover food, clear fluids, and when to take the prescribed laxative solution.

Tell the endoscopy team about diabetes, kidney or heart problems, pregnancy, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you use. Obtain specific advice for medicines that affect bleeding or blood glucose rather than changing them yourself. If sedation is planned, check the transport and supervision requirements in advance.

Temporary bloating or mild cramping can follow colonoscopy. Seek urgent assessment for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard or increasingly swollen abdomen, heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, fainting, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Follow the discharge contact instructions if symptoms concern you after returning home.

Confirm the reason for the test, the bowel-preparation schedule, and which medicines need individual instructions. Ask about sedation choices, whether tissue sampling or polyp removal may occur, when normal eating can resume, how results will be delivered, and what follow-up might be needed if the examination cannot view the whole colon.
