Does a double mastectomy prevent breast cancer?

Even careful surgery may leave tiny amounts of breast tissue in the skin or chest wall. Cancer can rarely begin in that remaining tissue, so the operation reduces risk rather than eliminating it.

Removing both breasts before cancer develops is called a risk-reducing or prophylactic double mastectomy. It may be considered when someone has a strong inherited predisposition or another clearly identified reason for very high risk. The decision is different from removing both breasts after cancer has already been diagnosed.

The operation has lasting effects on breast sensation, appearance and the options for reconstruction. It does not remove every possibility of cancer elsewhere in the body, and it is not automatically the right choice for everyone with a family history.

Ask for an individual risk assessment before deciding. A breast specialist or genetics professional can review relatives' diagnoses, any known inherited variant, previous breast findings and your personal priorities. Discuss surveillance as well as surgery, including which breast examinations or imaging may still be useful.

If you are considering reconstruction, meet the breast surgeon and reconstructive surgeon early enough to compare immediate reconstruction, delayed reconstruction and going flat. Ask how each option may affect recovery, sensation and later examinations.

After mastectomy, contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, wound discharge, fever, worsening pain or sudden shortness of breath. These features need assessment for a surgical complication.

Later, arrange an examination for a new chest-wall lump, skin thickening, persistent rash, nipple-area change if a nipple was preserved, or swelling under the arm. These changes have several possible causes, but they should not be ignored after risk-reducing surgery.

Ask what specifically places you at increased risk, how much breast tissue the planned technique is expected to leave, whether nipple preservation is suitable, and what follow-up you will need. Also ask about surgical complications, changes in sensation, reconstruction choices and support for the emotional impact of the decision.
