The term “doda PET scan” may be a local or mistaken name for PET or PET-CT imaging. Confirm the exact scan name on your referral so the imaging team can explain its purpose and preparation.

A small amount of radiotracer is given before imaging. Areas that take up more tracer may appear more active, but uptake is not a diagnosis by itself; inflammation, infection and normal organs can also show activity.

Clinicians interpret the images alongside your history, examination and other tests. PET-CT may help identify a suitable biopsy site, map known disease, assess response to treatment or investigate where a cancer began.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about food, drinks, medicines and physical activity. Tell the team beforehand if you are pregnant, could be pregnant, breastfeeding, have diabetes, use insulin, or have difficulty lying still.

Wear comfortable clothing and bring your referral, medicine list and earlier imaging if requested. During the uptake period, resting quietly helps prevent avoidable muscle activity from affecting the images.

Call before the appointment if you cannot follow the preparation instructions, your blood glucose is difficult to manage, or your health has changed since the scan was booked. The team may adjust the plan rather than produce images that are hard to interpret.

After the tracer injection, seek prompt medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness or a rapidly worsening reaction. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the reason for the scan.
