Do you need loop excision of the cervix after colposcopy?

A colposcopy lets a clinician examine the cervix closely and may include a biopsy. Loop excision removes a small area of cervical tissue using a thin heated wire, so it can both treat certain abnormal areas and provide tissue for closer assessment. It may be discussed when the biopsy shows a change that needs removal, when the abnormal area extends into a part that cannot be fully seen, or when the findings and screening result do not fit together.

A result that does not call for excision may instead lead to follow-up testing or another examination. The choice also considers pregnancy plans, previous cervical procedures, and whether preserving as much cervical tissue as possible matters to you.

Ask for the exact colposcopy and biopsy wording, including whether the sample was adequate and whether the transformation zone was fully visible. Confirm whether the proposed procedure is treatment, further diagnosis, or both. Before scheduling, discuss local anaesthetic, recovery, bleeding expectations, and how follow-up will check that the abnormal area has been managed.
