Do you need breast ultrasound after mammogram?

A mammogram uses X-rays to create breast images, while ultrasound uses sound waves and can show whether an area is fluid-filled or solid. Ultrasound may help assess a focused area, a palpable lump, or tissue that is difficult to interpret on the mammogram. It answers a different imaging question rather than simply repeating the first test.

A recommendation for ultrasound does not by itself diagnose cancer. The radiologist considers the image pattern alongside your age, symptoms, examination, and earlier scans.

Check whether the report recommends targeted ultrasound, routine follow-up, extra mammogram views, or specialist assessment. Tell the imaging team where you feel a change and bring previous images if they are held elsewhere. Ask when and how the result will be explained.

Seek prompt medical review for a new or enlarging lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a persistent one-sided change. These symptoms deserve assessment even when a recent mammogram did not lead to an ultrasound recommendation.

Ask: What did the mammogram show? Would targeted ultrasound add useful information? Is the finding related to my symptoms? Do I need comparison with older images, another view, or follow-up, and when?
