What should you know about diverticulitis: does it go away?

An episode can improve as inflammation settles, yet the bowel pockets may remain. That means recovery from one episode does not necessarily remove the possibility of another. Ongoing pain, bloating, altered bowel movements or fatigue may also have a different explanation and should not be automatically labelled diverticulitis. Improvement is best judged by symptoms and function: pain should ease, eating and drinking should become easier, and bowel activity should move toward your usual pattern.

Follow the plan given by your clinician and take prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Keep fluids going if you can, rest, and reintroduce foods gradually according to tolerance. Do not restart old antibiotics or make a major fibre change while acutely unwell without advice. Seek urgent care for severe or escalating pain, repeated vomiting, a rigid or markedly swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas or stool, faintness, confusion, or significant fever.
