Short answer

Diverticula are small pouches in the bowel wall; without diverticulitis, they are not inflamed or infected, and many people have no symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Term
Diverticulosis means diverticula are present without diverticulitis.
Symptoms
Some people have no symptoms; others notice bloating, constipation or abdominal discomfort.
Support
Gradual fibre changes, suitable fluids and regular activity may support bowel comfort.

What it means

The presence of these pouches is often called diverticulosis. They can develop where the bowel wall has areas of weakness, most often in the large bowel. Diverticulosis is different from diverticulitis: diverticulitis describes inflammation or infection affecting a pouch. Having diverticula does not by itself mean that inflammation is present.

Some people notice bloating, changes in bowel movements, constipation or intermittent abdominal discomfort, while others have no bowel symptoms at all. These symptoms can have many causes, so they should not be automatically attributed to diverticula. A clinician may consider your symptoms, examination and any test results together.

What you can do

Aim for regular bowel movements with gradual changes that suit you. Fibre from foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains may help stool pass more easily; increase it slowly and drink enough fluid unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Sudden large increases can worsen gas or bloating.

Gentle regular activity and avoiding straining may support comfortable bowel habits. Keep a brief record of pain, bloating, stool changes and foods that seem to trigger symptoms. A GP can help decide whether constipation, abdominal pain or another condition needs assessment and whether nutrition counselling would be useful.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review for persistent or worsening abdominal pain, a sustained change in bowel habit, repeated vomiting, fever, or blood in the stool. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, marked abdominal swelling, faintness, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. These signs need assessment because they may indicate inflammation, bleeding, blockage or another problem; they are not explained by the mere presence of diverticula.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Do my symptoms fit diverticulosis or another cause? How should I change fibre and fluids for my bowel habits? Do I need any assessment or follow-up? Which symptoms should prompt urgent care? Tell the clinician about medicines, previous bowel problems, bleeding, weight change, fever and any family history that may affect the assessment.

Questions people ask

Are diverticula the same as diverticulitis?

No. Diverticula are pouches in the bowel wall. Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection involving a pouch, often with symptoms that need medical assessment.

Can diverticula cause constipation or abdominal pain?

They can occur alongside constipation, bloating or abdominal discomfort, but these symptoms have several possible causes and should be assessed if persistent or worsening.

Should I change my diet if diverticula are found?

A gradual increase in fibre-rich foods may help some people, with suitable fluid intake. Individual advice is useful, especially if you have significant bloating, constipation or fluid restrictions.
